So far I ve shown you how to use the standard Drupal field types to create a new content type and how to create a field type that can be added to a content type. Next I ll show you how to use the Field API to programmatically add fields using the Field API in a module.

Note The App.config file of the WCF Service Library project is also useful because it shows you the barebones settings used to configure a WCF host application. In fact, you can copy and paste much of this code into your host s actual configuration file.

In addition to the basic WCF Service Library template, the WCF project category of the New Project dialog box defines two WCF library projects that integrate Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) functionality into a WCF service, as well as a template to build an RSS library (see Figure 25-2). The next chapter will introduce you to the Windows Workflow Foundation, so you ll ignore these particular WCF project templates for the time being (I ll leave it to the interested reader to dig into the RSS feed project template).

The Field API can be used to add fields programmatically to a content type or node type The following example demonstrates using the Field API to add a new field to a content type created through a module The Job Post module creates a content type that extends a traditional node (title and body) by adding a new field that stores and displays the name of the company that is sponsoring the job posting Adding fields takes place in the install file of a module in the hook_install() or hook_update() functions The first step in the hook_install() function adds the body field to our new Job Post content type By default a content type created through a module contains only the title field; you must implicitly add the body field The nodemodule defines a function named node_add_body_field(), which adds the standard body field to our Job Post content type.

You can find yet another Visual Studio 2010 WCF-centric project template in the New Web Site dialog box, which you activate using the File New Web Site menu option (see -Figure 25-3).

The Visual Studio 2010 web-based WCF Service project template This WCF Service project template is useful when you know from the outset that your WCF service will use web service based protocols rather than, for example, TCP or named pipes. This option can automatically create a new Internet Information Services (IIS) virtual directory to contain your WCF program files, create a proper Web.config file to expose the service through HTTP, and author the necessary *.svc file (you ll learn more about *.svc files later in this chapter). Thus, the web-based WCF Service project is a time-saver because the IDE automatically sets up the required IIS infrastructure. In contrast, if you build a new WCF service using the WCF Service Library option, you have the ability to host the service in a variety of ways (e.g., custom host, Windows service, or manually built IIS virtual directory). This option is more appropriate when you wish to build a custom host for your WCF service that can work with any number of WCF bindings.

The next step that I go through is adding the definition of all the fields that I want to add to the Job Post content type In the case of this example, there is a single field that I ll add named job_post_companies If I wanted to add multiple fields, I could do so by simply creating additional field definitions in the _job_post_installed_fields() function Defining the new field is a simple matter of giving it a name, a label, and field type The final step in creating the field is to instantiate the fields using the field_create_instance() function This function does all the behind-the-scenes work of creating the storage mechanism in the database to hold the values entered by the user When you use this approach, there s no need to define the tables in the database the Field API does all the work for you.
